What is now Mumbai was known to the Greek Ptolomy as Heptanesia, "seven islands." But in even more ancient times the area was known for the temple to the goddess Mumba, a consort of Shiva.
Mumbai Airport
Mumbai Airport ( Airport Code: BOM ) is situated in the northern part of the city and is approximately 30 kms from the city centre. The travelling time from city centre to Mumbai Airport during peak hours is 90 to 120 minutes depending on the traffic. In off-peak hours, particularly night time, when most international flights depart or land,
the distance can be covered in about an hour's time or less.
Mumbai Airport has two terminals, Santacruz Terminal for domestic operations and Sahar Terminal for international flights. Both terminals are situated about four kms apart. There are no shops ( duty free) in the arrival area. The departure lounges are marginally better equipped for shopping. They also have a restaurant, a snack bar and foreign exchange counter. However, check in and emigration are chaotic because of the bunching of flights at night. Phones are available at both arrival
and departure.
On Arrival
- On arrival passengers are required to proceed to arrival hall at ground level.
Passengers having immediate connections are required to proceed to transit area and
contact Airline transfer desk.
- Disembarking passengers are required to go through immigration and customs formalities.
- All foreign nationals must possess valid visa for India.
- After completing immigration formalities proceed to baggage claim area.
- Free baggage trolleys are available in this area.
- Customs area comprises of Green and Red channels. Green channel is for persons without
dutiable goods
- All baggage are cleared by customs after screening them through X-Ray.
Bombay Customs & Baggage Claim
Going through customs though tedious and somewhat time consuming is the easy part. (has installed closed circuit televisions [CCTV] to deter custom officers from troubling you, but they will find a way out). The adventure truly begins at baggage reclaim. Finding a good trolley may take more time. There is help on hand, but beware, these “helpers” will want to be paid exorbitant rates.

Taxi Bookings/Hotel Pickup
It is advisable to do all bookings of taxis (Pre-Paid) and hotels via the airport. If you can arrange to be
picked up via your hotel (most 3 star + hotels will offer this as a complimentary service) it would be beneficial as there are plenty of taxi drivers waiting to rip you off. Avoid using autorickshaw as they have a habit of sticking duplicate fare cards or cab fare card (cab cards are almost 30% more ...) to the unsuspecting passengers.
