Goa combines old Portuguese architecture, and a distinct Portuguese flavour to the lifestyle, with
a history that abounds with Indian mythology. Its unending beaches, the pristine beauty of the seascape,
its mystical hills and groves, the rhythmic pounding of the sea, its swaying palms - all make it a
fairytale land for the traveller. Extraordinarily warm and exuberant, the Goans are famous for their
hospitality. Equally unique are the Portuguese influences that colour the language, the landscape,
the food and the culture of the place.
Goa Airport
Goa Airport (Airport Code: GOI, Dabolim ) is located 35 kms from Panaji on the coast
near Vasco da Gama and is currently controlled by the Navy. Goa does not have a true full fledged
International airport , however it does have a domestic airport at Dabolim from where flights leave
for most major cities in India. You will find a lot of chartered private international flights to Goa
from Europe.
Changing Money/ Currency Exchange
In India, the unit of currency is the Rupee (INR). Change money with Authorized Currency Exchange places like
the airport, most banks and hotels and insist on a receipt, as it will help you reconvert unused rupees
into the original foreign currency at the time of departure. Avoid any people on the street who offer
to change your money at a temptingly high rate of exchange ( Generally you end up with fake currencies,
or its a scam where the street dealer bolts with your money. )
Taxi Bookings/Hotel Pickup/Motor Bike Rental
It is advisable to do all bookings of taxis (Pre-Paid) and hotels via the airport.
If you can arrange to be picked up via your hotel it would be very beneficial.
Motor Cycle Rentals
Its quite easy and popular to hire a mobike in Goa. This facility is practically available all over
Goa. However, prior to driving, do carry necessary papers, such as, licence, registration and
insurance documents. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit. Some agents
ask for your copy of passport and a deposit before giving you the bike. Normally, you have to tell
them where are you staying.
Goan Climate
Goa has a moderate temperature showing negligible variations in different seasons except during the
monsoon, which lasts from June to September. There are no extremes in temperature and no clear
demarcations from one season to the other except for the monsoon. May is the hottest month
while Jan and Feb are the coldest. There is a prevalence of tropical weather for the rest of the year.
The average temperature varies between 25°C - 30°C (67 F - 81 F). The average rainfall is
approx 225 to 300 cms, the average daily hours of sunshine is nine to ten hours in summer and
three to five hours during the monsoon.
